Bloober Team, the developer behind the recent Silent Hill 2 remake, says it’s done making “shitty” games, seemingly addressing the company’s past works such as Blair Witch and The Medium which received mixed reviews and some negative backlash from players. The Polish studio recently announced its next game, Cronos: The New Dawn. The company is out to prove that the critical acclaim of Silent Hill 2 wasn’t just a fluke.
Bloober Team director/designer Wojciech Piejko spoke to GameSpot about Cronos: The New Dawn and stated that they didn’t want to make another game like Silent Hill 2. Both games were being developed roughly around the same time at the studio. With Cronos: The New Dawn, Bloober Team wants to prove to players that it’s more than just a studio that makes panned horror games.
“It was tough for those couple of years before [Silent Hill 2‘s] release,” Piejko stated, talking specifically about the road leading up to the remake’s launch and the anxiety that Bloober Team felt. “They made it. We made it. Bloober made it. And now, it’s very good spirits inside [the studio.] We want to show what we can do on our own, how we can evolve our ideas.”
Bloober Team director/producer Jacek Zieba also chipped in on the conversation, mentioning that the team, following the release of Silent Hill 2, felt more determined to prove its talent, showing a bit of self-reflection by calling its past games “shitty.” Zieba told GameSpot:
“We want to be a horror company. We want to find our niche, and we think we found our niche, so now we just–let’s evolve with it. […] And how that happens is more complex, but it also happens organically in a way, like with [2016’s] Layers of Fear, people in the studio were like, ‘Okay, we made some shitty games before, but we [can] evolve.”
