Borderlands 3 Cross-Play Arrives For Everyone But PS4 and PS5 Owners

Borderlands 3 cross-play is officially a thing. Well, if you’re not playing on PS4 and PS5 though. Gearbox announced that the feature is now live across PC, Stadia, Xbox, Mac, Epic Games Store and Steam. Players can now join up with friends on other platforms and loot the world while they are at it. They can also team up and participate in the new Cartels seasonal event, level up with the new cap increase and partake in the True Trials mini-events.

Unfortunately, this does not include PS4 and PS5 players. Last month, Gearbox’s Randy Pitchford claimed that during the testing phase for the Borderlands 3 cross-play features, they were forced to remove support for PS4 and PS5 consoles. He did not provide further details as to why this happened. In addition, we don’t know whether or not the feature will even arrive in the future.

If you’re not on PS4 and PS5 then here’s how Borderlands 3 cross-play works. According to Gearbox, the system is controlled by SHiFT Matchmaking. This means that when you launch the game for the first time since the new update goes live, you are greeted by a new opt-in window. Here, players can input a unique Crossplay Display Name that is required for the SHiFT Matchmaking to work.

  • Must be a unique name not already in use by another Borderlands 3 player
  • Must be between 3-16 characters long
  • Must start with a letter, and is limited to a-z, A-Z, 0-9, or non-consecutive underscore, hyphen, or period/full-stop characters

Players can change their cross-play name on the official SHiFT website or in Borderlands 3 itself. Once you have a name, this is used for friends to find you on other platforms. Of course, you can still use the traditional platform friends feature if you’re not making use of cross-play.

There is a range of cool things to do in Borderlands 3 right now. Players can participate in the Revenge of the Cartels event. This event packs a range of cool cosmetics including skins and decorations to unlock. There’s also a level cap increase to 72 allowing players to use more skill points to build even crazier vault hunters. The big idea here is to do it with friends on other platforms.
