Borderlands 4 is reportedly set to have its big reveal at Summer Game Fest. The anticipated sequel was already indirectly confirmed by Gearbox Software shortly after the studio was acquired by Take-Two Interactive earlier this year. The fourth installment in the looter shooter franchise will apparently get a spotlight at Geoff Keighley’s show, though there’s also a small chance that it gets revealed before the event tomorrow with a deeper dive planned.
The report originates from leaker Kurakasis who has been mostly accurate with gaming leaks in the past. According to the leaker, Borderlands 4 is the game that 2K previously teased to be revealed at Summer Game Fest as “a sequel to one of its biggest franchises.” Fans initially believed that this could’ve also meant the next BioShock or Mafia but now we know to keep our expectations in check.
“It has been discovered via Exputer’s contacts that 2K will offer Borderlands 4‘s first-ever reveal at the upcoming Summer Game Fest on June 7,” said Kurakasis on Exputer’s forums. “There is also a chance that the game gets formally announced before the event, followed by a better show of it during the showcase, but I cannot confirm that at this point.”
Borderlands 3 released five years ago in 2019 so enough time has passed for Gearbox Software to cook up a sequel. Of course, this is excellent news for Borderlands fans who have been eagerly anticipating news about the next installment in the franchise.
The announcement of Borderlands 4 arrives at the perfect time as the upcoming live-action adaptation is set to release this August. That’s not a confirmation that the fourth game will release alongside the movie but that would be quite an impressive marketing stunt to pull. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford hopes that the Borderlands movie will kick off a cinematic universe, though we’ll have to wait and see if it lands with critics and fans first.
