The Borderlands movie has done historically bad at cinemas. With under $10 million in ticket sales during its opening weekend, it will likely go down as one of the biggest movie flops of all time. However, amid the movie disaster, the video games have seen an uptake of new players.
Many players have returned to the earlier games to get the “real” Borderlands experience. SteamDB reports a spike in all Borderlands titles including Borderlands, Borderlands 2 and Borderlands 3.
Borderlands 3, which is the latest game in the series, usually sits at around 2,000 daily players. It has been at a 6-month high of 12,000 since the movie launched on Friday. The last time the game saw a similar spike was in March when the film’s trailer was released.
Borderlands 2 has also seen an influx of players. The game usually rides around 4,000 daily players. it has since doubled to 8,000. Borderlands 2 is undoubtedly more popular when it comes to its daily player count.
Even the least popular game, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands – the Borderlands spin-off has seen a few players jump on board. It went from its daily 300 players to 2500 players on the movie’s opening weekend.
Of course, these player spikes won’t last very long. With no new content across these games, I doubt players will stick around. Borderlands 3 did get a new game update last week which added the ability to create maxed-out characters. However, the game’s DLC and post-game content is a bit lacklustre.
Reports claim that 2K Games is working on a Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands sequel. We don’t know much about the project at this stage. In June, we also heard reports that an entirely new Borderlands game was in development. At this point, we don’t know what to believe.
