The live-action Borderlands movie released in cinemas last month, ending its run a little earlier than planned after the movie scored scathing reviews with a low audience turnout in theatres. According to the latest box office numbers, Borderlands only managed to make $32 million internationally against a budget of $115 million (which doesn’t account for additional marketing costs).
As revealed by Box Office Mojo, the Borderlands movie only made $15,482,668 domestically and $17,205,002 internationally, bringing its total earnings to just over $32 million. By all accounts, this is quite an astronomical box offfice failure, especially for a movie that received heavy marketing with a cast of A-listers like Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis and Jack Black and a big budget of $115 million.
Borderlands would later release on home video on 30 August, less than a month after it appeared in cinemas, due to audiences simply refusing to watch the movie after its poor reception. As of writing, the live-action movie holds a 4.5/10 average rating from viewers on IMDB and 10% critic average on RottenTomatoes, where audiences gave a slightly higher approval rating of 53%.
In related news, developer Gearbox Software has announced Borderlands 4, the next chapter in the video game franchise. Details are scarce on the sequel for now, though we do have some information to go on based on interviews and social media posts. According to Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, Borderlands 4 will have a ‘far more dangerous’ villain than Handsome Jack, who first appeared in Borderlands 2 and is generally considered one of the best video game villains of all time.
Earlier this month, Gearbox Software also shed some light on its ambitions for Borderlands 4, claiming that the game will add plenty of depth to its RPG mechanics. It will also offer four new Vault Hunters as the defacto classes for players to choose – it’s common for new games in the franchise to introduce new Vault Hunters.
