Marathon, the upcoming PvP extraction shooter from Bungie, might cost only $40. This is according to a new report which claims that the studio is considering that price point, following in the footsteps of Helldivers 2 and Concord which were also priced similarly.
According to multiple sources talking to The Game Post, Bungie is apparently considering selling Marathon at $40 when it launches, following the trend of two other recently released live service Sony titles, Helldivers 2 and Concord. While Helldivers 2 went on to become a breakout hit this year, Concord suffered a grim fate as it was swiftly pulled offline only two weeks after its launch, making it possibly the worst high-profile live service launch in gaming history.
It’s hard to say if the price factored into the success (or failure) of both of these games, though many players argued that Concord should’ve at least launched as a free-to-play game if it had any hopes of gaining traction and a sizeable player base to stay afloat.
Fortunately, Bungie’s Marathon has a few positive things going for it. The game will not only launch on PS5 and PC but Xbox Series X/S as well, along with full crossplay and cross-progression across all platforms. Bungie also has a legacy in the gaming industry with the highly successful Destiny games, the live service franchise that many gaming companies aspired to reach with their own games as a service projects.
However, Bungie was in some hot water back in August when the director of Marathon was fired over sending inappropriate text messages to other female employees at the company. Bungie found itself in another round of trouble when it laid off 220 staff that same month – ex-employees also called for Bungie CEO Pete Parsons to step down from the company.
There’s no release date or window yet for Marathon but we’ll hopefully hear more about it in the coming months.
