Game developer, Bungie and game publisher, Activision are parting ways. After years of bringing great Destiny games to the market, the two companies have decided to split up.

The gaming industry was shocked to learn of the breakup, but insiders apparently suspected it for years. The tension between Bungie and Activision has apparently been building up ever since the first Destiny game was developed and released in 2014.

It seems like Bungie was the one to decide to split up, with the company releasing a statement in which it thanks Activision for its 8-year partnership. Bungie seems to be ultimately excited to move on and has taken custody of the Destiny gaming franchise.

We have enjoyed a successful eight-year run and would like to thank Activision for their partnership on Destiny. Looking ahead, we’re excited to announce plans for Activision to transfer publishing rights for Destiny to Bungie. With our remarkable Destiny community, we are ready to publish on our own, while Activision will increase their focus on owned IP projects.

One of the main reasons for tension between Bungie and Activision has apparently been due to the pressure placed on the release schedule for Destiny. Bungie was required by Activision to release a new Destiny game or expansion every year.

Destiny has been a huge game, selling over 50 million copies worldwide. Bungie now owns full publishing rights and responsibilities for the Destiny franchise.

Destiny 2 will remain on Blizzard’s Battle.net, with Blizzard reassuring Destiny 2 players that the company doesn’t foresee any disruptions.

The latest expansion of Destiny was released in September 2018, called Destiny 2: Forsaken.
