Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is getting an awesome new Zombie Mode. Developer Treyarch shared the first gameplay details for the upcoming mode in an in-depth developer trailer. There’s also a load of gameplay to watch too. According to Treyarch, this year’s zombie story acts as a reboot to the series with new characters and locations. Players are taken back to the 1980s. The multiverse is no longer a thing but the undead still threatens the world.
The Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War narrative is introduced as ‘Die Maschine’. It pays homage to the first-ever Zombie Mode map, Nacht der Untoten back in World at War. Players take on the role of a group of Grigori Weaver’s CIA-backed international response team members. They are sent into a derelict World War II bunker where they discover dark and terrifying secrets.
While still inspired by past events, Die Maschine is described as a completely new chapter in the Zombie Mode universe. This means there are new characters to play, new ways to play them, a new progression system and more. With that being said, the game mode will still follow the endless round-based zombie action. While Treyarch claims the experience is new, much of it looks very familiar including Pack-a-Punch, power-ups, crazy weapons and more.
The big change here allows players to use their game-wide progression and loadout in the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War zombie mode. This means that instead of starting the game with a simple pistol, players can use their existing global ranks, weapon levels and scorestreaks from other parts of the game, in the zombie mode.
There’s also a new rarity system in the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War zombie mode. Treyarch claims this system allows any weapon to be more sustainable in later rounds. Players can also equip lethal, tactical and support equipment at the same time.
Treyarch shared details on the new Exfil feature which lets player call in a chopper to escape the map. Once called-in, relentless waves of zombies spawn in and players need to survive until the chopper arrives. If they do, they can escape and get rewarded for their efforts.
