Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Banner Spotted on Steam

The Call of Duty series left steam way back after the release of Call of Duty: WWII. Activision decided to release all future instalments through the Blizzard Game Launcher which then saw the following releases launch exclusively on the platform. While PC gamers could easily install the launcher and download their games there, Steam still makes for a much more convenient place to have all your games. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 might see the franchise’s return to Steam.

According to the official Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 page, Modern Warfare 2 has been spotted in artwork leading to the franchise’s landing page. The image was spotted by the ModernWarfare2 Reddit community and has since been removed from the page by Activision. However, users managed to grab a snapshot of the image before it was pulled down.

The artwork shows the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 lead character art blended into the background of the banner. This banner is usually used to take gamers to the full landing page where they can find more Call of Duty games and purchase DLC. However, given that the last COD game on Steam was WWII, it doesn’t have much to discover.

Users are now suggesting that Activision might plan on releasing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on Steam given that the artwork is now on the site. If Activision had no plans to launch the game on Steam, why would they be uploading artwork for the game? While it is still too early to tell what Activision has in store for Steam, the possibility of the game’s launch seems plausible.

Given that the Call of Duty series has dramatically underperformed in the past few years, Activision might be looking at ways they can sell more copies of the game. Releasing the new title on Steam is a great way to get it into more hands of gamers. Then again, this might be a simple mistake or perhaps a clever marketing ploy to tease gamers about the new COD game without actually having them purchase it on Steam.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is expected to launch on 8 October this year for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
