Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Rakes in $800 Million on Launch Weekend

Activision is rolling around in a pile of money this morning after Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 broke sales records this past weekend. The publisher released a statement regarding the launch weekend for its annual shooter and it claims that Modern Warfare 2 has topped $800 million in just three days. This number is directly referencing the game’s sell-through figure which is the money it has made from game sales to the public.

Modern Warfare 2 now has the biggest opening weekend in the franchise’s history. Not only has the game sold a ridiculous amount of games but it has also set records for the most number of hours played at launch for a premium Call of Duty game. It has also become the biggest entertainment opening for the year.

Activision says that the popularity surrounding Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 surpasses other media formats including Top Gun: Maverick and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. It has also surpassed previous franchise records set by Modern Warfare 3 in 2011. Modern Warfare 3 took five days in order to hit the sales milestones that Modern Warfare 2 hit in just two days.

Activision CEO Bobby Kotick released a statement regarding the game’s launch.

“Thank you to our talented team that has created magic through extraordinary artistry and technology, and to the global community of players who find joy and connection through Call of Duty. This milestone belongs to them”

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is now available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC. Activision plans on releasing the anticipated Warzone 2 on 16 November as players transition over to the new version of the popular free-to-play battle royale game.
