Activision has announced Call of Duty: Vanguard and confirmed the game’s details, release date and more. The announcement was met with a rather lacklustre experience in Call of Duty: Warzone last night that saw players experience a very similar short gameplay session as last year’s reveal. Thankfully, outside of the Warzone announcement, Activision released new information about Vanguard.
Call of Duty: Vanguard Campaign
Call of Duty: Vanguard is set to release on 5 November 2021 for PS4, PS5, Xbox and PC. The game is based on a World War II setting and players will experience the rise of Special Forces across the era. According to Activision, the Call of Duty: Vanguard campaign will jump across different locations and four Special Forced characters based in the Pacific, Western, Eastern and North Africa fronts.

Each Special Forces character will bring a unique gameplay approach and location to experience. The characters include Arthur Kingsley, LT Polina Petrova, Captain Wade Jackson and 2nd LT Lucas Riggs. These characters are all based on real heroes who fought in World War II. Keep in mind that Call of Duty: Vanguard is not a sequel to the 2017 WWII game.
Activision says that Vanguard plays true to the World War II experience whereas there are no Navy Seals, high-tech equipment and the war was fought everywhere possible. The campaign is reportedly a robust action experience where players will participate in massive destructive battles, control a range of vehicles and overcome relentless warfare.
Call of Duty: Multiplayer and Maps
Call of Duty: Vanguard will also bring the heat when it comes to the multiplayer experience. The game is launching with 20 maps of which, 16 will be traditional 6v6 multiplayer maps. The other four have been designed around new game modes including a mode called Champion Hill. Activision describes this game mode as a mix between a battle royale and a gunfight.
A new feature called Combat Pacing has been added to Call of Duty Vanguard. This feature includes a range of gameplay options that players can choose from to enhance their multiplayer experience. At launch, these options are limited to three settings and each one tailors the multiplayer gameplay to your liking.
The modes are called Tactical, Standard, and Blitz. Standard is the traditional multiplayer experience of past Call of Duty games. However, the Tactical Combat Pacing option is more like Hardcore. As for Blitz, this is described as a much more casual experience while also borderline “chaos”. The setting will enable more players in smaller maps for classic gameplay.
The multiplayer in Call of Duty: Vanguard features a new level of destruction. Players can damage and destroy a range of items to enhance their gameplay. For example, you can now throw a grenade into a room and rustle up all the items around you while kicking up smoke and dust. This may distract players who are hiding or camping in the area.
Players can now shoot through wooden planks and specific walls to create new lines of sight. Doors that may seem closed off and locked can also be blown apart revealing new hidden areas and pathways.
The Gunsmith feature from Modern Warfare and Black Ops Cold War is returning in Call of Duty: Vanguard. However, the feature now has two added mechanics including custom ballistics and ammo variations.
At the moment, we don’t know much about the specifics when it comes to the Call of Duty: Vanguard multiplayer maps and modes. Thankfully, Activision will showcase the game mode in full soon ahead of a planned alpha in the coming weeks.
Call of Duty: Vanguard Zombies
This year’s Call of Duty will also come with a brand new zombie experience. While the official reveal is still a while away, we do know that the mode acts as a prequel to the Dark Aether story in last year’s Black Ops Cold War. We also know that Treyarch is currently developing the Call of Duty: Vanguard Zombies instead of the main game’s developer Sledgehammer Games.
