Onimusha: Way of the Sword

Capcom Announces New Onimusha and Okami Games

During The Game Awards, Capcom stunned fans with two major game reveals that came out of nowhere. The studio announced that there are plans to bring back the Okami series as well as revealed a new Onimusha game planned to launch sometime in 2026.

First off, we have Okami. The game is just called the “Okami Sequel” right now with no other working title known to the public. Capcom’s reveal trailer reveals Amaterasu dashing through a black and white forest that leads to an opening. As the opening appears, the video gets a dash of colour and the God Wolf gets his abilities. Of course, the trailer includes the iconic Celestial Paint Brush.

According to Capcom, the Okami sequel project is now underway. It sounds quite early in development so don’t expect it any time soon. The official website confirms that the original Okami creator, Hideki Kamiya, is working on the sequel in collaboration between various studios including M-Two Inc., Machine Head Works Inc., and CLOVERS Inc. Little else is known about the game.

As for Onimusha: Way of the Sword, it is a brand-new game in the series. It marks the first new release in the Onimusha series since 2006. The reveal trailer shows off some gorgeous-looking locations and some intense gameplay. The game seems to bring back all the dark fantasy swordplay we enjoyed from the originals.

Onimusha is clearly further into development than Okami, given its gameplay focus during the trailer. Capcom says the game will launch sometime in 2026. The game is seemingly built on the RE-Engine.

Onimusha first debuted with Onimusha: Warlords back in 2001, with swordplay combat based on the “Issen” counterattack mechanics. Introduced as a staple in the series, the mystical Oni Gauntlet bestowed the ability to absorb souls from the Genma, who were monstrous deformed creatures from another world.

A lone samurai steps forth, wielding the legendary Oni Gauntlet, and engages in brutally graceful sword fights, wiping his brow of sweat and blood. What path will he take, and what is the reason behind those battle-worn eyes?

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is set in Kyoto in the early Edo period. The nefarious Malice has transformed the historic city into a dark twisted haven for the return of the demonic Genma.
