On 8 March, Captain Marvel hits cinemas, so it is more than two weeks before most fans will see Brie Larson as Carol Danvers. From all the trailers and TV Spots we’ve seen so far, the film looks fantastic and Captain Marvel probably play a big role in Avengers: Endgame as well. I’m extremely excited for both films and at the same time, disappointed in humanity. You see, Captain Marvel review bombing is already underway over on Rotten Tomatoes and for the lack of a better term, it is quite rotten.

Early this month, I wrote about this exact same thing when it comes to video games. Review bombing seems to be the new in thing to do and I asked if review bombing is a valiant undertaking or drenched in entitlement. This also applies to films such as Captain Marvel or any other entertainment for that matter.
Over on Rotten Tomatoes in the audience review section for Captain Marvel, the review bombing is going strong. You can see a tonne of comments there, from people who haven’t watched the film yet. Some comments get pretty nasty, so click at your own risk.
Brie Larson has come under fire for some recent comments and stances. This, however, is her personal view and I am not here to debate if she is correct, incorrect or anything like that. As a white, straight, male critic in my mid-thirties, I simply don’t care what an actor’s personal stance is. It is all about how good the film will be and we will have to wait until 8 March to find out if it delivers or not.
Most of these negative reviews in the Captain Marvel review bombing focus on Brie Larson, not the character she portrays, from comments focusing on “social justice warrior” aspects to many others. Some who focus on the character Captain Marvel just as bad, even though I don’t think many realize that Carol Danvers made her first appearance in the comic books in 1968 and became Ms Marvel in 1977.
Whatever your opinion about Brie Larson is, Captain Marvel does belong in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and you simply can’t judge a film you haven’t seen yet, be it positively or negatively.
