Cyberpunk 2077 is without a doubt one of the most anticipated releases of this decade – much like Red Dead Redemption 2. It isn’t strange then, that during the CDPR’s latest earnings call they were faced with a very “provocative question” relating to RDR2. Another interesting fact from the call is that Cyberpunk 2077 hype is currently “many times greater than” what it was for Witcher 3.

When asked if CDPR aims to release Cyberpunk 2077 with the same level of quality that Rockstar did for Red Dead Redemption 2 (seeing that Witcher 3’s bugs took almost three months to fix), and thereby warranting such high review scores, CDPR CEO Adam Kiciński replied.

A fairly provocative question, isn’t it? Without a doubt, quality is of paramount importance. We strive to publish games which are as refined as Red Dead Redemption 2, and recent Red Star releases in general. What does that teach us? Well, it teaches us that we need to publish extraordinary games, and that’s exactly what we are planning.

Kiciński went on to explain that even though the gaming community keeps on growing year by year, one person only has so much time on his or her hands to play a video game. If developers, therefore, do not deliver something extraordinary like RDR2, then gamers could simply choose to play something that does. CDPR, of course, intends to deliver just such an extraordinary game.

At the time of writing, the above video is standing at 11,282,686 views! If you compare it to the Witcher 3’s debut gameplay trailer that reached 3,778,399 views then it is very clear that Cyberpunk 2077 hype far surpasses that of the Witcher 3 – at least when it comes to trailers.

As you can see, interest in Cyberpunk, or at least in its trailers, is many times greater than in the case of The Witcher. Of course I do not encourage you to draw far-reaching conclusions; however at this early stage of the campaign the most important question from our perspective was whether Cyberpunk – the new IP we’re introducing to the market – will take hold, whether it will be as well received as we would expect, at least in terms of attracting gamer interest.

Kiciński further added that based on the above reception they are convinced that Cyberpunk 2077 will deliver what they expect in terms of sales. We do not yet have a release date for the game, although it is expected to be in 2019.

The next question then, is, of course, how development is progressing. According to Kiciński they are currently “fleshing out the game world,” and “progressing fast and according to plan.” Much of the main campaign is finished but lacks the level of detail we saw in the Gamescom gameplay trailer. Once that is finished it enters the “polishing stage”, and then the final phase which involves patching minor and major bugs.

Red Dead Redemption 2 seems to have raised the bar and is now the new standard by which triple-A games are being judged. Do you think Cyberpunk 2077 can live up to its hype and stand toe-to-toe with titles like RDR2?
