Rowan Atkinson, Sally Hawkins and Olivia Colman have joined Timothée Chalamet in the new Wonka production. The movie acts as a prequel to the original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and is being directed by Paddington filmmaker Paul King. According to reports, the film kicked off its principal photography earlier this week in London.
Paul King has utilized a handful of his cast members from both Paddington and Paddington 2. This includes Tom Davis, Simon Fanaby and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith. Timothée Chalamet has been cast as Wonka and the film is described as a story that explores the “vivid, mythical beginnings of the imaginative young inventor”.
The film takes place before the events of Roald Dahl’s critically acclaimed book and ties into the original 1971 Gene Wilder Charlie and the Chocolate Factory film. David Heyman, who produced Paddington and worked on the Harry Potter movies is working alongside Luke Kelly on the production team. Kelly was originally part of Dahl’s The Witches and Matilda. Both are classic films from back in the 90s.
The Wonka prequel film is set to debut on 17 March 2023.
