Chris Pratt Won’t Do An Italian Accent in The Mario Movie

This year, Nintendo dropped one of the biggest bombshells of the year by announcing Guardians of the Galaxy actor Chris Pratt as the voice of Mario in their upcoming animated movie adaptation of Super Mario Bros. However, when it comes to his performance, a producer recently suggested that Pratt sadly won’t be doing an Italian accent in the Mario movie.

Speaking to TooFab, Mario movie co-producer Chris Meledandri stated that Pratt’s performance won’t feature Mario’s iconic Italian accent. Instead, Pratt will put a spin on a new accent that he created for the popular character. For some reason, Mario’s original voice actor Charles Martinet is actually in the movie but not voicing Mario.

Meledandri addressed the very vocal concerns from fans about Pratt’s casting choice, but reassured them that he has faith in the actor’s performance:

“All I can tell you is the voice that he’s doing for us in Mario is phenomenal. Yeah, I can’t wait for people to hear it. We cover [that accent] in the movie, So you’ll see we definitely nod to that – but that’s not the tenor of the performance throughout the film.”

Seems like Mario’s Italian accent will be featured in the movie as a nod, but won’t be the focus of Pratt’s performance. That begs the question exactly what kind of voice Pratt will use to portray Mario since the character’s high-pitched Italian accent has become quite famous in the gaming world.

The Mario movie will consist of an all-star Hollywood cast that also includes Jack Black as Bowser, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya-Taylor Joy as Princess Peach, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad. That’s quite a cast, and I’m sure Black will absolutely nail his performance above all others.

The untitled Mario movie is currently in production and releases on 21 December 2022.
