All Christopher Nolan Movies Ranked Worst to Best

Christopher Nolan is Building a Giant Mechanical Cyclops For The Odyssey

A movie adaptation of The Odyssey, based on Homer’s epic Greek poems, is currently in the works under Oppenheimer and The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan. The cast list for the epic keeps growing as Tom Holland, Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o and many others are lined up for the movie. Thanks to Nolan’s tendency to use practical effects over CGI, we’re also getting a giant mechanical cyclops.

The Odyssey has its roots firmly planted in Greek mythology and that means we’ll see familiar figures such as the Polyphemus Cyclops make an appearance in the movie. However, in Nolan’s eyes, that literally means making an appearance as the director is reportedly planning on filming in Nestor’s Cave in Greece with a massive 6x6m mechanical anthropomorphic puppet built inside the cave. Needless to say, that’s going to be an incredibly expensive animatronic.

Christopher Nolan has a tendency to do things practically over the use of CGI, so this shouldn’t come as a surprise. During the filming of Oppenheimer, Nolan replicated the Trinity Test nuclear explosion practically without the use of CG. He even built a full rotating hallway for a fight scene in Inception. In the end, they all looked phenomenal on film so he seems to know what he’s doing building a large mechanical cyclops for The Odyssey.

Oppenheimer went on to be nominated for 13 Oscars back in 2023, winning most of them including Best Picture, Best Director for Nolan, Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. and Best Actor for Cillian Murphy. Initial reports surfaced last year that Nolan’s next movie would be a 1920s horror about vampires but it looks like that rumour turned out to be false.

The Odyssey is set to release in cinemas worldwide on 16 July 2026 – the same year Robert Eggers plans to release his next gothic horror movie, Werwulf.
