Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 launched earlier this year to mostly positive reviews due to its quality of life improvements and quick-burst campaigns. While it initially launched on consoles and PC, fans suspected that it might get a release on Nintendo Switch 2 as well at some point. Now that we have confirmation of the $70 Switch 2 version, we also now know that the physical edition of the game will only have a code in the box.
As reported by GameSpot, the physical edition of Civilization 7 on Nintendo Switch 2 doesn’t actually come with the game on a cartridge. Instead, players who purchase it will be greeted by a download code in the box, requiring players to download the entire game. It seems like the physical box is only meant for display purposes, which is a little disheartening for collectors hoping to build up their physical collection of Switch games.
We already knew that certain Switch 2 games may not have the entire game on the cartridge but now it looks like we’re slowly getting more information about which games will be affected. This now includes Civilization 7.
On the bright side, the Switch 2 version of Civilization 7 will fully harness the new Joy-Con mouse controls on the next-gen console, making the gameplay a little easier to grasp and bringing it closer to its PC counterpart. Fans complained that the PlayStation and Xbox versions of the game featured controls and UI that were a bit difficult to use and navigate.
The game’s description reads:
“The award-winning strategy game franchise returns with a revolutionary new chapter. Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 empowers you to build the greatest empire the world has ever known! In Civilization 7, your strategic decisions shape the unique cultural lineage of your evolving empire. Rule as one of many legendary leaders from throughout history and steer the course of your story by choosing a new civilization to represent your empire in each Age of human advancement.”
Civilization 7 will launch alongside the Switch 2 on 5 June. It’s also available on the original Switch.
