Last week, developer Sandfall Interactive and publisher Kepler Interactive released a new turn-based RPG titled Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. The game’s launch was met with an extremely positive reception by critics and fans, quickly garnering some of the highest review scores of the year so far. It’s popularity cemented it as a new force to be reckoned with in the gaming industry, but now that applies to Hollywood as well. A live-action movie adaptation of the game is currently in the works.
As reported by Variety, the live-action Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 movie is being handled by Story Kitchen, the studio behind the Tomb Raider animated Netflix series and several live-action movie and TV projects of Tomb Raider in the works at Amazon and MGM Studios. Story Kitchen was founded by Dmitri M. Johnson and Mike Goldberg, who also co-produced the Sonic The Hedgehog movie franchise.
Story Kitchen released a statement expressing their excitement working on the Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 movie:
“We’re thrilled to collaborate with Sandfall Interactive to bring the rich, immersive world of ‘Expedition 33’ to the big screen. The game’s compelling narrative and complex characters provide a solid foundation for a cinematic experience that will resonate with both gamers and moviegoers alike.”
The story synopsis for the game reads:
“Once a year, the Paintress wakes and paints upon her monolith. Paints her cursed number. And everyone of that age turns to smoke and fades away. Year by year, that number ticks down and more of us are erased. Tomorrow she’ll wake and paint “33.” And tomorrow we depart on our final mission – Destroy the Paintress, so she can never paint death again. We are Expedition 33.”
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a ground-breaking turn-based RPG with unique real-time mechanics, making battles more immersive and addictive than ever,” the description continues. “Explore a fantasy world inspired by Belle Époque France in which you battle devastating enemies.”
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is now available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. It’s also available on Xbox Game Pass, where it’s found with another acclaimed RPG, the long-awaited The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered.
