LawBreakers released back in 2017 and it failed terribly. There is no getting around the truth here. The game released as a “non-overwatch” clone but it was basically Overwatch with less gravity, crazy in-game purchases and it oozed of arrogance… Just like its creator Cliff Bleszinski. The game was not a success at all selling very little copies and forcing Cliff’s new game studio “Boss Key” to close its doors. Cliff ultimately left the gaming world as a result but recently posted on Instagram as he reflected on the failure of the game saying he should have never gone political with it.

[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”Cliff Bleszinski” link=”” color=”#A2FE02″ class=”” size=”21″]Ever since the studio closed I’ve been wracking my brain what I could have done differently. Pivot HARD when the juggernaut of Overwatch was announced. Been less nice with my design ideas and more of a dictator with them.
One big epiphany I had was that I pushed my own personal political beliefs in a world that was increasingly divided.
Instead of the story being ‘this game looks neat’ it became ‘this is the game with the ‘woke bro’ trying to push his hackey politics on us with gender neutral bathrooms.’ Instead of ‘these characters seem fun’ it was ‘this is the studio with the CEO who refuses to make his female characters sexier.’ Instead of ‘who am I going to choose’ it became ‘white dude shoehorns diversity in his game and then smells his own smug farts in interviews’ instead of just letting the product … speak for itself.
It’s okay to be political when your company or studio is established for great product FIRST. But we were unproven and I regret doing it. (This will be quite the doozy of a chapter in the upcoming memoir.)”[/perfectpullquote]
Cliff mentions that he is currently working on a memoir of his own life in the video game industry which may or may not be an interesting read.
But even with him opening up about the game, people are not having it. Many gamers around the world are chiming in about their view on not only Cliff Bleszinski but Lawbreakers too saying “he made a generic game when the market was already over-saturated“. Another user simply says “No, your game just sucked and people don’t like you“.
Lawbreakers was an unfortunate incident but hopefully, people can use it as an example when going into video game development. The video down below will explain just why Lawbreakers failed;
