Remember the first-person competitive shooter Lawbreakers? Remember how it failed completely at launch and was shut down just under two years later in 2018? Creator Cliff “CliffyB” Bleszinski wants it to make a comeback.
Lawbreakers had a rather unfortunate run. The game was published by Nexon and despite the company’s heavy marketing, its open beta only raked in around 7500 players on Steam. At the time, Nexon blamed Lawbreaker’s failure on PUBG which was the biggest game in the world back in 2017/2018.

While PUBG was blamed, it might have actually been more of Lawbreaker’s fault than anything else. The game was compared to most other hero shooters on the market at the time. Overwatch was a perfect example. Sadly, Lawbreakers didn’t make a bold enough statement to last and was shut down in 2018.
Five years later, CliffyB is looking at a comeback. The creator tweeted at Nexon boss and owner Owen Mahoney saying that the company currently has the rights to the game and they should chat about a resurrection.
In a follow-up tweet, CliffyB replied to a user saying he doesn’t want to be CEO and lead designer. However, if a 3rd party wants to resurrect the game with Nexon, he would be keen to consult on the agreement.
Of course, nothing has come out of this tweet just yet. We don’t know if communication has kicked off with Nexon and CliffyB. Nexon hasn’t said anything about Lawbreaker since it shut down in 2018 and the rocky past is a sensitive subject for both the publisher and CliffyB.
Would Lawbreakers have a place in the current industry? It might do okay as a free-to-play competitive shooter. One of the biggest gripes with the game was its heavy retail price tag and its added loot boxes.
Well, turns out Nexon does own the rights to LawBreakers. @owenmahoney how about sliding into my DMs so we can talk about a resurrection?
