Cloverfield 2 is still moving forward says the director. The movie, which was first announced back in 2022, was set to be a direct sequel to 2008’s Cloverfield, the found footage monster movie which has since become a pop culture staple. While spin-offs and indirect sequels were made in the past, it looks like J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions still has plans to develop a more direct sequel.
During the premiere of his new movie Hollow Road, director Babak Anvari, who has been attached to Cloverfield 2 since 2022, gave a brief but optimistic update on the project. “So sad that I cannot [share anything], because everyone on that team, they’re very secretive. Which I understand. But I love your excitement. And whatever happens, just know that hopefully you’re gonna get something amazing,” he said.
Judging by his words, it seems like Cloverfield 2 is still moving forward despite the secrecy surrounding the movie.
The Cloverfield franchise produced two spin-offs or indirect sequels in the form of 2016’s 10 Cloverfield Lane and 2018’s The Cloverfield Paradox. The former was praised for its acting and confined location compared to the original movie, while the latter was panned by fans and critics for muddying the ongoing story and accidentally creating one of the largest monsters in kaiju movie history, an adult form of the original monster standing at least 30,000 feet tall.
While we probably shouldn’t expect such monstrous proportions for the monster in Cloverfield 2, it’s good to know that there’s still more in store for fans of the franchise. As far as kaiju movies go, there’s been a resurgence of them over the past decade, no doubt owed to the success of Legendary’s Monsterverse which released Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire last year. Japan has also ramped up the quality of its Godzilla movies following 2016’s critically acclaimed Shin Godzilla and 2023’s Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One.
