Last week, Sony officially shut down Concord, the latest multiplayer hero shooter from Firewalk Studios – or more accurately, pulled the game offline, leaving its future a mystery. Since then, players who haven’t requested a refund for the game yet have reported getting a message on their consoles stating that the game has not only been scrubbed from sale and taken offline but completely erased from their PSN accounts and consoles too.
According to a report from TheGamer, players who purchased a physical copy of Concord will get as far as the game’s title screen but can’t progress any further. For players who bought the game digitally, though, Sony is apparently deleting the entire game from consoles with the message, “Thank you for being a valued PlayStation customer. Live services for Concord went offline on (September 9, 2024). The game is no playable and as a result, we have removed this content from your account.”
Many have pointed out that this hasn’t happened before with other multiplayer games that were also taken offline. Players are being reminded that they own nothing digitally and with a snap of fingers, corporations like Sony can very easily erase games from your digital library entirely.
While the future of Concord is up in the air at the moment, Firewalk Studios said in its statement that it is looking at “options” for how to “better reach our players.” Some believe that the game will return one day as a free-to-play title, as one of the main criticisms for the game was its $40 price tag – a bizarre move considering more successful hero shooters like Overwatch have taken the free-to-play route in order to reach more players.
Within the space of one month, Sony has shut down Concord, received glowing praise for Astro Bot as a potential Game of the Year candidate and ruffled the internet with the price of the PS5 Pro. It’s been quite a month for the company.
