Corning Gorilla Glass DX+ Protects Smartphone Camera Lenses and Lets in More Light

Corning has announced a new set of Gorilla Glass designed specifically for smartphone camera lenses. As you know, smartphones seem to be getting more and more lenses as the years go by and Corning has made it their goal to protect these camera sensors. The new Corning Gorilla Glass DX and DX+ have been designed to be the most durable glass ever made for a smartphone camera lens while also letting in more light than ever before.

While this sounds fantastic, Corning does say that the glass is not entirely new. The Corning Gorilla Glass DX and DX+ have already been seen on smartwatches since 2018 but the design has now been carefully tweaked to fit the needs of a smartphone camera lens. For example, the glass had to simply be sturdy for watches but now it was important to have the light feed through even more.

Corning says that light is one of the most important factors when it comes to photos. However, reflections from the glass on a sensor often reduce this light by a few percent. The new Gorilla Glass DX and DX+ now prevent less light reflection on the glass itself meaning that 98% of pure light gets into the sensor. This is compared to the 90-92% previously. The more pure light that can hit the sensor the better as photos will now appear with less glow than ever before.

But the Corning Gorilla Glass DX and DX+ is not just great for light, it is also extremely scratch resistant. Corning says that the scratch resistance on this new glass has almost reached sapphire levels of durability.

Corning has not shared details yet on what company has picked up the new Gorilla Glass DX and DX+. However, Samsung is set to announce a new product range during its August 2021 Unpacked event so we might see it in action for the first time then. You can watch the drawn-out video down below to see how Corning developed this glass.
