As expected, Valve released the Battle Royale mode for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO) late last night. The mode is called Danger Zone, blending the fast-paced action of the Battle Royale genre with the tactical gameplay of CS: GO that we all know and love.
As we reported earlier this week, the map you will be killing each other on is called Blacksite and it doesn’t have the massive player count of most Battle Royale games, but instead opts for 18 players per server. It’s Valve’s take on Battle Royale and from the looks of it, it’s pretty awesome. The CS: GO Battle Royale mode was expected, but what wasn’t expected is that CS: GO has also gone free-to-play, as Valve has opened the floodgates.
Before we get to the info about Danger Zone, let’s talk about CS: GO going free-to-play. Anyone can grab the game off Steam and start the download. You will have access to all the game modes, matchmaking and even a limited set of item and weapon drops. It’s all there and you don’t have to pay a single cent.
For those who already own CS: GO, Valve has some treats as everyone who owns the game automatically gets upgraded to Prime Status, while free-to-play players will be able to upgrade via the Steam store for R205. Prime status isn’t needed to enjoy any of the game’s modes or CS: GO’s Danger Zone mode. Those who already had Prime Status will continue as they have always had and receive drops and weapon cases from the same drop lists, some of which are exclusive to Prime Status. Further, Prime Status members will be eligible to receive the all-new exclusive Danger Zone Souvenir MP5-SD | Lab Rats weapon skin which is available until 9 January 2019. If you’ve been playing CS: GO for over five years leading up to the Danger Zone update, you will also receive a CS: GO Loyalty Badge. Now, let’s get to the CS: GO Danger Zone mode and what it offers.
CS: GO Danger Zone
The Battle Royale mode is set on the Blacksite map and features fast-paced action mixed with CS: GO’s tactical combat. It sounds incredible and you can play it in a solo queue, or with a friend, or even two friends in trio matchmaking. Each match has up to 18 players (for teams) and 16 players for solo, and you can choose the position where you drop into the map at the start of the round.
Weapons work the same as they do in CS: GO but there is a difference as players will have 120 hp instead of 100. In CS: GO’s Danger Zone, players won’t be running around looking for weapons, but instead, they earn cash for completing contracts, rescuing hostages, eliminating a high-value target and more, which you can access each round via your in-game tablet.
Ever match features a set of pistols, SMGs, rifles and heavy weapons from the classic CS: GO arsenal, but there’s also a lot more, such as plant-anywhere C4, throwable melee weapons and more. Then, there’s the Med-Shot, which allows you to quickly heal up and get back into the fight. This item also provides a temporary speed boost so you can get out of dodge.
Last, but not least for collectors, there’s a special Danger Zone case featuring 17 unique weapon skins designed by the community. The case also features Horizon knives as rare special items.
