Cyberpunk 2077, the latest open-world RPG from CD Projekt Red, will receive a Game of the Year Edition following the release of the Phantom Liberty expansion in 2023. The news comes directly from the company CEO Adam Kicinski, who confirmed that it will get the same treatment as The Witcher 3: Game of the Year Edition.
The news was first broken by Stockwatch.pl, which echoed Kicinski’s claims about the future of the Cyberpunk franchise. This seemingly includes a planned Game of the Year Edition for Cyberpunk 2077, which is expected to release sometime after the Phantom Liberty expansion. Needless to say, this edition will likely also include the expansion, but it does raise a few interesting questions.

Namely, Cyberpunk 2077 Game of the Year Edition might not launch on last-gen consoles. Phantom Liberty will only release on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S (including PC), so it’s unlikely that the Game of the Year Edition will release on PS4 and Xbox One without that expansion included, unless CD Projekt Red have something else planned for last-gen.
Kicinski’s full statement on the future of Cyberpunk and a potential Game of the Year release is as follows:
“It’s the natural order of things – it was the same with The Witcher, which after both expansions was finally released as a Game of the Year Edition and has been on the market that way ever since. The same can be expected in this case.”
The “Game of the Year” naming convention has been around for a while though it doesn’t make complete sense. Far Cry 6 is also getting a Game of the Year Edition. However, neither Far Cry 6 or Cyberpunk 2077 were ever nominated for Game of the Year from significant awards shows in their respective years.
Either way, it’s good to know that players will be able to pick up a “definitive” edition that bundles everything previously released for the game, in case you were holding off on purchasing the Phantom Liberty expansion outright.
Cyberpunk 2077 is currently available for PS4, Xbox One and PC with free upgrades to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
