Cyberpunk 2077 to blend RoboCop-type action with Blade Runner philosophy

With Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red wants to deliver an authentic representation of the Cyberpunk genre. To accomplish this, they’ve drawn inspiration from movies like RoboCop and Terminator for the action. Films like the original Blade Runner and Ghost in the Shell helped capture the heartbeat of the genre.

One of CD Projekt Red’s trademarks is to deliver compelling stories. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a perfect example of this with its layers of intrigue, NPC backstories, political agendas and so on. From previous interviews, we know that Cyberpunk 2077 is a much more ambitious project for the developer than Witcher 3 with its over 200 hours of game time.

Another difference is that with Cyberpunk 2077, CDPR is placing a stronger emphasis on action. The Cyberpunk genre also lends itself to a multilayered culture and philosophy – there is so much to explore.

In PC Gamer’s December Issue, CDPR Writer Stanisław Święcicki, talked about this blend of action and philosophy we can expect from Cyberpunk 2077.

Some cyberpunk is more pulpy and driven by action. Stuff like Terminator and RoboCop. But then there’s the more philosophical side of the genre. Think Blade Runner or Ghost in the Shell. Our mission is to give players strong elements of both. Storytelling is hugely important to us as a studio. We want to tell stories that resonate with people on an emotional level and ask important questions. So there will be a lot of that in the actual game. It’s an important part of the genre.

For me, the ultimate game is one that delivers a compelling story wrapped around actions that emphasize the core message of the game. It sounds like Cyberpunk 2077 will be such a game.

Lead Cinematic Animator Maciej Pietras explains that with Cyberpunk 2077, they aim to deliver a seamless blend of action and story. That means, everything is connected, for example, when in conversation with an NPC, he or she will notice subtle things you do, like turning away to look at something else. Characters will act less like templates and more like actors.

The depth of the game and the attention to detail sounds astounding. I for one am happy that CDPR hasn’t yet announced the release date as it means they’re focusing on making the game they want and not chasing a deadline.
