The Competition Commissioner Thembinkosi Bonakele has announced that Vodacom will reduce monthly data prices by at least 30% from the beginning of April this year. Deputy commissioner Hardin Ratshisusu said that the competition committee instructed Vodacom and MTN to reduce prices by at least 50% and 30% respectively.

As of now, Vodacom’s prices will go down from 1 April 2020 by 30% to 40% depending on the service. For example, Vodacom 1GB of data offering valid for 30 days will reduce from R149 to R99 per 1GB. This is a 34% reduction in pricing.

It is unclear whether or not this will impact contract holders. Vodacom has yet to announce how this will affect other packages and bundle prices. We will update you as we learn more. Hopefully, both MTN and Vodacom release a price change list soon.
The price changes come after the companies were taken to the Competition Committee in an attempt to reduce South African data prices to align them with the rest of the world. South African pay way too much for mobile data in the country.
