It is hard not to compare Dead Space and The Callisto Protocol to one another. If anything, The Callisto Protocol was meant to be the spiritual successor to Dead Space but sadly, the game fell flat on its face after its launch was ridden with major performance issues overshadowing a mediocre horror game. Even with its disappointing launch, The Callisto Protocol managed to sell more copies than Dead Space if we compare sales across both launch weekends.
Keep in mind that there are a few factors to remember when looking at these sales numbers. The Callisto Protocol did release at a lower price tag in comparison to Dead Space (in some regions). The Callisto Protocol also launched across more platforms including PS4 and Xbox One. Dead Space was only released on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.

According to GamesIndustry.biz, 80% of all Dead Space physical sales were on PS5. However, Dead Space only sold half the amount of copies The Callisto Protocol sold during its launch weekend. Again, this could be due to the game’s PS5 and Xbox Series X/S launch meaning more gamers purchased digital versions. It might also be related to the higher price tag for Dead Space which came in at an eye-watering $70 and R1499 in SA.
Even with the lower sales, Dead Space did manage to debut at the No.1 spot at retailers in the UK. This is followed by FIFA 23 at No.2, God of War Ragnarok at No.3 and Forspoken which debuted at No.4. Forspoken’s No.4 debut is a bit concerning given that it is a new game release. Sadly, reviews of the open-world fantasy game have been quite negative which likely resulted in poor sales.
The Last of Us is slowly creeping its way up the chart thanks to the growing popularity of the tv show. Sales for The Last of Us Part I grew 32% at retail while The Last of Us Remastered was up 27%.
Again, these numbers only represent a small fraction of physical sales in one specific region. However, they are usually a good indication of how games are performing across the globe. Sad to see Dead Space trickling behind The Callisto Protocol though.
