The upcoming live-action Death Stranding movie from A24 and Kojima Productions is quickly taking shape. The adaptation will be based on the critically acclaimed video game from Hideo Kojima, which launched in November 2019. While the cast has yet to be announced, the director and producers have already been decided, consisting of A Quiet Place: Day One director Michael Sarnoski and producers Lars Knudsen and Ari Aster, the latter of which directed acclaimed horror movies Hereditary and Midsommar.
As reported by Deadline, Michael Sarnoski will write and direct the live-action Death Stranding movie. He also co-wrote and directed last year’s A Quiet Place: Day One starring Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn. Meanwhile, Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen will serve as producers. Aster broke into the horror movie scene with his 2018 horror hit Hereditary for A24. A year later, he directed the cult horror movie Midsommar, both of which were critical successes.
As of writing, it’s unclear if the live-action Death Stranding movie will directly adapt the story of the video game or put its own spin on the formula (similar to the upcoming Until Dawn movie, which follows a completely new cast but still retains the butterfly effect-esque mechanics of the game).
The Death Stranding video game already features a stacked cast of familiar Hollywood actors including Norman Reedus as Sam Porter Bridges, Lea Seydoux as Fragile, Mads Mikkelsen as Clifford Unger, Lindsay Wagner as Bridget Strand and Margaret Qualley as Mama. A24 and Kojima Productions haven’t revealed if the cast from the game will reprise their roles in the live-action adaptation or if new actors will be hired, though we’ll surely find out soon.
The official description for Death Stranding reads:
“In the future, a mysterious event known as the Death Stranding has opened a doorway between the living and the dead, leading to grotesque creatures from the afterlife roaming the fallen world marred by a desolate society. As Sam Bridges, your mission is to deliver hope to humanity by connecting the last survivors of a decimated America. Can you reunite the shattered world, one step at a time?”
