At the moment, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is sitting on a 56% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it is eclipsed by an audience score of 96%.
Critics have called the film “flat and tedious”. Some have even gone as far as to say the movie is as much of a disappointment as the original 1993 live-action version. However, moviegoers don’t seem to care about what the critics say. The ticket sales are higher than ever and if anything, will continue to skyrocket as the weeks go by.
Of course, this is great news for the movie industry which was hit the hardest during the covid-19 pandemic. Even in 2022 when the pandemic somewhat subsided, general movie ticket sales were down by 35% compared to pre-covid numbers. The Super Mario Bros. Movie might mean that family movies are back and cinemas are officially back to normal again.
Nintendo is also banking on the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The video game giant is currently hosting a range of promotions to help market the film. You can get a Nintendo Switch bundle which includes a Red Joy-Con controller, Super Mario Odyssey and stickers for The Super Mario Bros. Movie for R7,499.
