During the Destiny 2: Beyond Light showcase, Bungie revealed its plans for the upcoming next-gen consoles. Those who were wondering whether or not they would have to purchase Destiny 2 again on PS5 and Xbox Series X, worry no more. Bungie revealed that at launch, Destiny 2: Beyond Light will support the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. In addition, the developers state that users will not need to purchase the game again when upgrading to the next-gen console.
When it comes to backwards compatibility, Bungie claims Destiny 2: Beyond Light will not a backwards-compatible game. The developers will release specific versions of the game which run at 4K 60fps. In addition, players will be able to play with their friends on older consoles. This means that you won’t need to worry about your PS4 friends being left out of the Raid if they don’t own a PS5 yet. The same goes for Destiny 2 PS4 owners who want to play with next-gen PS5 friends. Bungie claims it is the same situation for Xbox One and Xbox Series X. In short, everyone will be able to play together on the same console family.
In addition to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X news, Bungie hinted at cross-play arriving sometime in 2021. The developers claim that they want everyone to be playing together regardless of what platform they play on. This could mean PS5 and Xbox Series X owners could Raid together with PC players too. This is a feature the Destiny 2 community have been asking for and Beyond Light and the future “The Witch Queen” expansions could deliver it. However, this is still up to Sony and Microsoft so let’s see now next-gen goes first.
