Destiny 2 Servers Crash After Hitting All-Time Concurrent Player Record

During its launch of Destiny 2: Shadowkeep last night, Bungie encountered some nasty server issues which resulted in the developer pulling them offline for “emergency maintenance”. This was mainly due to Destiny 2 hitting an all-time high with over 200,000 players playing the game at its peak around noon PT on Steam alone.

When the expansion launched, players encountered an error while trying to get into the game which resulted in a waiting screen as Bungie slowly let more and more players in overtime. We attempted to play the game when it launched at 19:00 SAT which resulted in us being kicked after two hours and unable to get back in.

It seems the issue was due to Bungie pulling the servers offline for four hours while they performed emergency maintenance. Bungie also disabled Destiny’s in-game currency that can be bought with real-world money for an hour due to it being a buggy process.

This morning, it seems all is well again in the world of Destiny 2 with the servers up and running. Players are still encountering waiting queues but they are not lasting 45 minutes like last night. The influx of players is mainly due to Bungie releasing the new free-to-play version of the game, Destiny 2: New Light and the latest Shadowkeep expansion at the same time.

Hopefully, as the days go on we are able to log into the game without having issues and we can play the new content without the free-to-play game affecting our purchase.

Did you try and play Destiny 2: Shadowkeep or New Light last night? Let us know if you managed to get into the game before it crashed.
