CD Projekt RED says porting Cyberpunk 2077 to the Nintendo Switch 2 wasn’t a real challenge. In an interview with IGN, Charles Tremblay, VP of Technology at CD Projekt Red, has touched on the development road for the game and how the studio managed to get it running on the new console despite being one of the biggest bombs back at launch.
Tremblay says that development on Cyberpunk 2077 for the Switch 2 kicked off back in 2023. Nintendo originally met with the studio to discuss the console during a top-secret meeting. At that time, Nintendo didn’t have any development kits available for the console. However, Nintendo did have the console up and running with the design nailed down.
CD Projekt RED immediately jumped on board and agreed to collaborate with Nintendo on a Switch 2 port of Cyberpunk 2077. The studio claims they thought the console was a “really cool product”.
CDPR did work with Nintendo before this port. The studio collaborated with the company to develop The Witcher 3 port for the original Switch console. However, Saber Interactive actually developed that port with the help of CDPR. Cyberpunk 2077, on the other hand, has been completely built by CD Projekt Red. Tremblay says the project was handled by a quite small team working end-to-end with Nintendo, delegating the process.
Cyberpunk 2077 launches on Switch 2 tomorrow, 5 June. It joins the list of 41 confirmed games for the console.
