Diablo 4 Dev Says Respeccing Won’t Be ‘Prohibitly Expensive’

Blizzard Entertainment recently held early access and open beta weekends for its upcoming action RPG, Diablo 4. Fans quickly noted that respeccing a character’s skills was much easier than in previous games which usually required hefty sums of in-game money or could be re-rolled only a handful of times throughout the game. A developer recently stated that respeccing won’t be “prohibitively expensive” in Diablo 4.

Responding to a fan on Twitter inquiring about Diablo 4‘s respec options, Diablo franchise head Rod Fergusson stated respeccing a character will not be “prohibitively expensive, and we’ve made it easier by being able to refund a single skill point or the entire tree at once.”

Respeccing in the Diablo series essentially means reallocating skill points to other paths on the skill tree, usually to refine a build or, of course, correct it. Respeccing can only be done once per difficulty level in Diablo 2 while Diablo 3 let players respec whenever they wanted, but it had strict penalties including a lengthy cooldown before you could use new skills or losing the “Nephalem Valor” buff which characters over level 60 get from killing elite monsters.

For those that played the beta and experimented with respeccing in Diablo 4, you may have noticed that it’s taking a slightly different route. Every single skill in Diablo 4 is now open to reallocation point-by-point using gold as a currency. This currency only increases in value the more you go down your skill tree. You can also choose to refund the entire skill tree at once, though it usually comes at a big price once you reach higher levels.

Fergusson reassured players that despite the increased price for reallocating skills at higher levels, it won’t be too expensive. Thankfully, you can accumulate plenty of gold and valuable items in Diablo 4 (or any Diablo game) if you farm the right places and grind out the resources.

Diablo 4 launches on 6 June 2023 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
