South Africans can download the Disney+ app on their PS5 consoles starting today. Disney announced that the app is now available for the gaming console and can be found under the Media section on the home screen.
The Disney+ app for PS5 has been a long time coming. The service launched in South Africa back in May this year and the app wasn’t available to download until today.
At the moment it is still too early to tell how the PS5 Disney+ app runs in South Africa. The Xbox Series X/S app launched in September and sadly, offered a mediocre experience for console owners. The app still doesn’t stream at native 4K meaning your 4K gaming console and TV won’t be delivering the highest quality possible on the Disney+ service.

Disney claims the PS5 app does stream at “up to 4K” in the press release so it will be interesting to see how well this app runs and whether or not it achieves this promised bitrate.
This is still an underlying issue across the board for Disney+ in the EMEA. The majority of Disney+ TV apps run at 1920×1080. The apps that do run at 3840×2160 stream content in HD. So there’s quality control in place to assure South Africans get 4K content on their 4K TVs.
The only way to get native 4K Disney+ in SA is to purchase a 4K Android box or make use of an Apple TV device. Apart from that, every other version of the app simply doesn’t work properly. At the time of writing, the Disney+ app wasn’t available on my PS5 console. I will keep checking today and once available, test some streams to see just how smooth the experience is.
Disney has yet to share any details on the PS4 console launch for the app…
