Disney has announced a launch window for Disney+ in South Africa. According to the company, the popular streaming service will debut sometime in the middle of next year. Around June or July. This will enable South Africans to enjoy the original content such as Wandavision, Stars Wars: The Mandalorian and more.
The news comes from Disney’s latest 2021 financial results where CEO Bob Chapek broke the news of the streaming service’s launch delay in Europe. According to Chapek, Disney+ was originally meant to release this year in Europe. However, the company has been forced to delay the rollout to 2022.

Disney says that the delay in Europe is good news though. It now allows the company to undergo a broader rollout of Disney+ around the world. This includes Europe, parts of the Middle East and South Africa. Chapek says that if all goes well, Disney+ will be available in South Africa in summer 2022. Of course, that is actually winter here.
Disney+ South Africa
The Mouse House didn’t share much more than that. According to Channel24, the official statement laid down the basics for the release window saying:
“As confirmed in The Walt Disney Company’s Q3 earnings call, Disney+ will launch in South Africa in winter 2022. We will share more details as we approach the launch next year.”
We are still quite some time away from getting Disney+ in South Africa but this is good news regardless. It is unclear how the service will roll out in the country and what is going to happen to Disney content on other providers such as Netflix. We also don’t know what the pricing structure looks like.
Hopefully, Disney+ comes in at an affordable rate. South Africa is not short of streaming platforms at the moment. Other than Netflix, South Africans have a lot to choose from including Amazon Prime, Apple TV+, PCCW, Vodacom Video Play, Google Movies, Showmax, DSTV and the most recent BritBox.
Disney+ is a massive platform that is growing bigger every day. The company recently announced that they plan on hitting 224 million subscribers by the end of 2024. That number is currently sitting at 116 million. Keep in mind that the service is very limited to specific regions at the moment. When Disney+ does roll out in Europe, South Africa and the Middle East in 2022, these numbers might skyrocket closer to that goal.
