Disney Plus Price Hike Hits South Africa

Prepare to pay more for Disney Plus as the South African platform is getting a price hike starting on 19 July. Disney is increasing the price locally by around 15% for both the monthly service and the annual subscription.

This means you’ll now pay R139 a month for Disney+ monthly or R1,390 for the annual subscription (you get two months free). You can still sign up for the annual service and get a discount but that savings has gone from R278 to R238.

Disney says the new prices will go into effect on 19 July. Subscribers will be charged the new rates the next time their service renews after that date. However, customers who subscribe through the App Store or Google Play store need to be aware of the information provided by those platforms.

The company says it will also notify all subscribers of the price hike ahead of the effective date.

The Disney Plus hike in South Africa is one of many price increases we have dealt with in the past few months. We know that Disney was rolling out price hikes in other regions but many were hopeful that it would fly over SA and skip us. Sadly, with the ongoing exchange rate looking abysmal compared to the dollar and rand, this was expected.

Disney Plus launched in South Africa back in May last year and while we still don’t have the majority of the cool features the US version has, the service has since improved with a better app experience, higher-quality streams and faster OTP messages.
