In a wild turn of events, EA CEO Andrew Wilson is reportedly being considered for the position of the new CEO at Disney, replacing current chief Bob Iger. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on who you ask), Iger’s current contract runs into 2026 so it might be a while until anything is made official. However, this could be quite a shake-up in the entertainment industry.
The report originates from The Wall Street Journal (via IGN), which claims that current EA CEO Andrew Wilson is up against two other unknown candidates for the position of Disney’s new CEO to replace Bob Iger in 2026. Iger actually retired from his position back in 2020, though returned in 2022 after his successor, Bob Chapek, was pushed out of the company.
Wilson’s name is very well-known in the gaming industry, spending over 24 years at EA (with 11 of those years serving as CEO of the gaming publisher). Under his leadership, Wilson overlooked the launches of several games and franchises over the last decade including Apex Legends, a number of Star Wars games and BioWare’s projects, to name a few. He’s also been held accountable for EA’s numerous infamous controversies too.
The reception to Wilson’s possible consideration for the position of CEO at Disney has been mixed. Some believe that Wilson could bring a fresh new perspective to Disney’s business model, having worked in the gaming industry while others think that candidates more suited to the role and have experience working as film studio executives should take the job instead.
Ultimately, we won’t know the outcome of Disney’s decision until 2026 so we’ll have to wait and see how this develops. In the meantime, EA recently published BioWare’s long-awaited action-RPG, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which had a mostly successful launch after bringing in record Steam players and garnering decent user reviews.
