Columbia Pictures has brought on District 9 director Neill Blomkamp to write and direct a new Starship Troopers movie. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this will be the series’ first new theatrical release since 2008’s Starship Troopers 3: Marauder.
Details are scarce at the moment, but the report says the new Neill Blomkamp Starship Troopers movie will be based on Robert A. Heinlein’s 1959 book. It will not be a remake or a sequel to any of the current movies.
According to sources, Neill Blomkamp’s wife, Terri Tatchell, will co-produce the new Starship Troopers movie, which is now officially in early production. There’s no expected release date at this time.
The original 1859 book from Robert A. Heinlein has been widely criticised for celebrating military fascism. It has been portrayed quite brilliantly in the past films, especially during the 1997 debut film starring Casper Van Dien, Denise Richards, Neil Patrick Harris, and Michael Ironside. At the time of the book’s release, the public shunned the hidden themes of the story; however, it has since been celebrated as the world evolved.
Neill Blomkamp has tried to work on various alien projects over his career. At one stage, he was even pegged to produce an Alien movie, which was put on the back burner in favour of Ridley Scott’s Prometheus follow-up, Alien: Covenant.
The South African-born director has made a successful career creating sci-fi films regardless. He is best known for his Johannesburg-based alien movie, District 9, and Chappie. He also created his own RoboCop movie called RoboCop Returns. He also recently directed the Gran Turismo movie.
