Dota Auto Chess Has 4 Million Players & Rumours Suggest Valve Wants to Acquire the Mod

There’s an extremely popular and relatively complicated, fan-created custom game in Dota 2 that has seen a meteoric rise. It is called Dota Auto Chess and anyone who’s played Dota 2 recently will have probably seen people mentioning it. According to reports, Dota Auto Chess broke the 4 million player milestone recently and arguably more impressive is the 300,000 concurrent player number, roughly a third of Dota 2’s concurrent player numbers.

This free custom game turns Dota 2 into a slower, more strategic experience, as the name suggests. It is so popular right now that rumours are starting to appear that Valve wants to acquire Dota Auto Chess from the creators and make it a Valve title. Remember that DotA started as a mod in Warcraft III, while even Counter-Strike’s origins can be traced back to a Half-Life mod. Therefore, it really isn’t much of a stretch to think that Valve could acquire the incredibly popular Dota Auto Chess.

According to VPesports, their sources are saying that Valve is “thinking of ways to commercialize the Dota 2 mod and offer support and development help as a full-fledged title.” Further, the developers behind Dota Auto Chess said in a Reddit AMA that they are thinking of hiring more staff and even expanding their marketing team. Even more exciting is that they noted they contacted Valve to work with the company for a Dota Auto Chess matchmaking system.

I, for one, prefer standard Ranked Dota 2 matches over Dota Auto Chess, but it is clearly very popular with the community. In comparison, Dota Auto Chess is 100 times more popular than Valve’s Artifact, so it makes all the sense in the world for Valve to step in.
