WOW Presents has announced that Drag Race South Africa has been greenlit at World of Wonder and the show has entered its planning phase. The local spin-off of RuPaul’s Drag Race reality TV show will kick off casting in 2025.
Details are slim on the local production at this time. The big news is that it has officially been greenlit at WOW Presents. The social media announcement confirmed the news and the fact that it will debut on WOW Presents Plus when it is released.
WOW Presents Plus is currently available in South Africa as a paid subscription service. The platform gives users access to the entire RuPaul’s Drag Race series including the main show and all the international spin-offs. The service also includes other original shows and movies created under the label.
While the Drag Race South Africa news is exciting, fans have questions. We don’t know who is going to judge the show at the moment. Given the lack of “RuPaul” in the title, this local version will likely be judged by a different person. Other international versions of the show feature their own judges which often originate from the country.
Given Drag Race South Africa is a first, WOW Presents will have to fill those judges’ chairs with someone. Still, the news is exciting for fans who have been waiting for a South African version of the show.
