Dragon Age 4 Will Reportedly Not Launch on PS4 and Xbox One

Dragon Age 4, the upcoming RPG from BioWare, is reportedly not getting a release on PS4 and Xbox One. A recent listing by one of the game’s developers revealed it will only be coming to current-gen consoles and PC, which makes sense considering that the game is expected to only launch by 2023 at the earliest, meaning EA will leave the last generation behind.

First spotted by GamesBeat, who cited the LinkedIn page for Dragon Age‘s lead player designer Daniel Nordlander, Dragon Age 4 is listed to release on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC, with no mention of PS4 or Xbox One. GamesBeat further verified this information with one of their own unnamed sources, seemingly confirming that the anticipated RPG will skip out on a last-gen release. At the moment, many games are releasing as cross-generation titles including Horizon Forbidden West, God of War Ragnarok and Halo Infinite, but by the time 2023 rolls around, we’ll likely see developers shift their focus to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S only.

Dragon Age 4 isn’t the only upcoming project from EA that will target current-gen consoles, as the Dead Space remake was also confirmed to skip out on PS4 and Xbox One. The untitled Mass Effect sequel from BioWare is reportedly releasing on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles only, though that seems to be further away from release than Dragon Age 4 so it makes sense.

As this generation continues, we’ll begin to see most gaming releases target the more powerful current-gen hardware instead of trying to optimize it for PS4 and Xbox One (an issue that was prevalent during the launch of Cyberpunk 2077, for example). This will hopefully lead to smoother development periods as the focus is then dwindled down to getting the game to run as best as it can for fewer consoles. It took a couple of years for the PS4 to detach from the PS3 completely with cross-gen releases. So by 2023, we believe games will primarily be built for and release on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Dragon Age 4 is currently in development, and if these reports are true, then it will only be coming to current-gen consoles and PC.
