Dragon Age: The Veilguard director Corinne Busche is leaving BioWare following the game’s launch back in October. Rumours of her departure began swirling around online late last week, but Busche has now confirmed the news, saying she has been offered an opportunity she couldn’t turn down.
In a statement, Busche says she did what she wanted to achieve at BioWare. That was to come in and help right the ship. She says returning Dragon Age to a proper-quality single-player RPG was a privilege of a lifetime.
“At the heart of it, this was about my own fulfillment. I did what I set out to do at BioWare. That is to come in and help right the ship. I love Dragon Age, and BioWare, so the chance to return the game to a proper quality single player RPG was the privilege of a lifetime. It was hard fought, as games with such tumultuous dev cycles rarely end up shipping, and even more rarely turn out great. We, as a team, did it. And it was hard. It took a toll on me. BioWare still has a lot of work to do culturally, but I do believe they are on the right footing now.”
Busche says she is leaving the studio voluntarily. She claims an opportunity has been presented to her that she could not turn down. She hints that it will be in the CRPG space and “upholding traditions of great characters”.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard performed decently enough during its launch. While EA has not commented on whether the game’s sales met its expectations, the company has praised it for “returning BioWare to its strengths“.
The sequel to Dragon Age Inquisition was in development hell at one stage. The game went through a decade-long development cycle and at one stage, was even being developed as a multiplayer live-service game. It was rebooted a number of times before finally releasing in 2024 as a single-player RPG.
BioWare has confirmed that The Veilguard won’t get any DLC or future content updates. Instead, the studio is now focusing its efforts on the Mass Effect sequel, which is now full steam in development.
