BioWare has unveiled boss fight gameplay for its upcoming RPG, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, showcasing a battle against a particularly tough dragon. The trailer debuted during last night’s PlayStation State of Play broadcast, showing off the game’s new combat system which merges real-time action with the pause mechanic to command your companions and unleash your special abilities.
The latest gameplay trailer for Dragon Age: The Veilguard pits players, with their custom-created character Rook, and their chosen companions against a blighted dragon. A bit of tactical thinking is needed thanks to the pause mechanic (called the ability wheel) which allows you to pause combat and select from a handful of spells and special abilities (each with cooldowns, it seems). You can also use this menu to command your companions to do their own unique moves, creating opportunities for powerful chain-link attacks.
In a previous blog post, BioWare went into a little more detail about how the customisable ability wheel works:
“Our new customisable ability wheel will help you turn the tide of battle at any time. It will allow you to pause the action, issue commands to your followers, use abilities, and unleash devastating combos. As you become more powerful, you can start to see the potential in how much fun (and hectic) things can get.”
Last week, BioWare released a 22-minute gameplay deep dive for Dragon Age: The Veilguard, showcasing more locations, characters and role-playing elements that are at the heart of the experience. BioWare also detailed exploration and companion features in a separate post. If you’re wondering how well your PC will run the game, the developer also released the official PC system requirements needed to play at the recommended settings as well as ultra.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard launches on 31 October 2024 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. Watch the latest dragon boss fight gameplay below:
