BioWare has explained in some detail how romance and relationships will work in its upcoming RPG, Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Of course, if you’re a fan of the older Dragon Age games or even Mass Effect, you know that BioWare offers some of the most interesting romances in video games thanks to how much work is actually put into them, feeling less like filler and more like meaningful content to explore as you get to know your love interests.
Thanks to some information provided in a recent Game Informer article, BioWare went into detail about romances and relationships in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. The studio stated that this will be its “most romantic game yet” and judging by the details, it’s easy to see why. Each companion will have a relationship level tied to Rook (your protagonist) which can be affected by all the choices you make in the story and world.
When you rank up a companion’s relationship level, you’ll receive a skill point that you can then spend on them. Every companion will have five unique upgradable abilities that can synergise with your Rook’s build but you can only bring three of them into combat at a time. Like previous BioWare games, each companion’s personal quests and issues will tie into their relationship with you, so it sounds pretty par for the course when it comes to BioWare romances.

BioWare also explained that every companion will be different in relationships. Some will be more confident as they’ve been in past relationships before while others will be awkward since they’ve never been in a relationship. You also don’t necessarily have to build romantic relationships – friendships can also be built.
Finally, all companions will be pansexual which means they’ll be attracted to your Rook regardless of gender or preferences. Like Garrus and Tali from Mass Effect, if some companions aren’t romanced then they will form relationships with each other.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard launches in fall 2024 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. Make sure you read up on everything you need to know.
