Dragon Age The Veilguard Gameplay Release Date BioWare

Dragon Age: The Veilguard Reached Half EA’s Expectations

Dragon Age: The Veilguard didn’t do as well as EA hoped it would. The RPG launched in October and only managed to reach half of EA’s expectations. The company was hoping that the game would garner 3 million players during the first quarter of launch but only “engaged” 1.5 million players.

EA hasn’t stated whether or not these 1.5 million players are direct sales or active players. Keep in mind that Dragon Age: The Veilguard is part of the EA Play Pro subscription, so you can play the game without actually buying it. EA might be reporting on the general player engagement across the subscription. As for actual game sales, we don’t know how well these performed.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard seemed to be doing okay at launch. According to SteamDB, the game hit the top 10 pre-orders during October and reached 77k active players during its first few days of launch. But then again, these numbers kind of look like a game that would have sold 1.5 million units.

Beyond the social media noise regarding Dragon Age: The Veilguard, fans of the series were irked by the direction BioWare took with the game. Many of them complain about the lack of RPG elements, the poor Hollywood writing, and the watered-down mechanics. As a big fan myself, I do agree. I have enjoyed the fantasy elements of Veilguard, but the game is generally weaker in every other aspect.

BioWare has confirmed that the studio is now focusing all of its efforts on Mass Effect. Dragon Age: The Veilguard will not get any DLC as a result. The director of the game, Corinne Busche, has also departed BioWare following the launch of Dragon Age. She claims to have been offered a new opportunity elsewhere but was happy to have helped the studio fix the Dragon Age series.
