Dragon Quest 12 (or as it’s officially titled, Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate) is still in development, according to series creator Yuji Horii. The game was first unveiled back in 2021. Since then, we’ve heard nothing about it or received any new trailers beyond its initial announcement video. Horii has now assured fans that development on the game is still ongoing.
In a recent interview with Gamereactor, Horii was asked about any updates regarding Dragon Quest 12. “I am making it, putting lots of work into it… I can only say that the next work will be great too, [I’m] working really hard,” he replied. “Please look forward to it, is the only thing I can say.” When pressed further about if the team had any plans to release the game on Nintendo Switch 2, Horii gave a rather vague answer. “I believe it could be compatible with Switch 2 as well.”
Horii didn’t provide any further details about when fans can expect the next trailer or update. We already know some information from four years ago when Dragon Quest 12 was first announced. Horii revealed at the time that he wanted to give players more options and choices, with plans by Square Enix to change the franchise’s command battle system. What shape that will take is anyone’s guess, though some fans speculate that it will lean more heavily towards action, following a similar trajectory to the Final Fantasy games.
Horii made a similar comment about the game’s development back in February this year, also confirming that it’s still coming and that news would drop little by little over time. In the meantime, Square Enix is also working on remasters of the first three Dragon Quest games. Dragon Quest I + II HD-2D is expected to launch in late 2025.
Dragon Quest 12 is currently in development.
