Dragon Quest III HD 2-D Remake is officially coming to PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and PC. A full remake of the third installment in the long-running Dragon Quest JRPG series was first announced back in 2021, being recreated using the same art style as Octopath Traveler. Square Enix has now revealed that it will be coming to consoles and PC, though no release date was mentioned.
In a video celebrating Dragon Quest Day, Square Enix released a teaser video confirming that Dragon Quest III HD 2-D Remake will be coming to consoles and PC. Sadly, it wasn’t accompanied by any other information including a release date, though this is a good sign that it’s on the right track in development. We should hear more news about the anticipated remake soon, either at this year’s Summer Game Fest in June or sometime later in the year.
Dragon Quest III was originally released in 1988 for the Famicom in Japan and later for the NES in America. It’s widely praised as one of the best games in the franchise, which makes this remake all the more exciting for fans. Using Octopath Traveler‘s unique art style is definitely a smart move as the title effortlessly blends reto 2-D and 3-D to create a visually striking and original presentation.

In related news, Square Enix recently announced its plans to make future AAA games multiplatform going forward. Following the releases of Final Fantasy XVI and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, which were both exclusive to PS5 but underperformed for the company, it seems like the publisher is trying to make up for lost sales by implementing a strategy that will allow players on Xbox, Nintendo and PC to play important releases.
