DualSense Controller Price Hike Hits South Africa Ahead of PS5 Pro Debut

South Africans will have to pay a bit more for a PS5 DualSense Controller starting today. The gaming accessory has officially gone up in price with the standard variants costing R1,699 and the Special Edition DualSense Controllers at R1,799.

The price hike was first spotted in the United States as Best Buy increased the base price by $5 yesterday. Other retailers including Walmart, Target and the PS Direct store also increased their prices.

Keep in mind that the recently launched Astro Bot Limited Edition DualSense Controller was released in South Africa at R1,799. This already marked the highest price for the accessory since the PS5’s release back in 2020. That price is what you can expect to pay for all future special edition controllers.

If you choose to go for the standard DualSense models, you’ll pay R1,699. These include the older Glacier White, Midnight Black, Nova Pink, Starlight, Cosmic Red, Galactic Purple etc. However, other models including the Sterling Silver, Cobalt Blue and Astro Bot have a new revised price of R1,799.

Most local retailers still have yet to adjust their pricing so there’s still time to grab a DualSense Controller at a lower cost. Keep in mind that Sony is rumoured to debut a revised DualSense Controller this evening during the PS5 Pro stream. The controller supposedly packs stronger adaptive triggers and improved battery life. So maybe hang on for a bit to see if the upgrade is worth the wait.

At launch, the DualSense Controller sold for R1,499 in South Africa. The price hike follows international trends. Sony recently increased the price of the PS5 console in Japan. It now sells for $200 more than it did back at launch.

Given the PS5 Pro’s debut later today, it will be interesting to see where Sony positions the price. Reports claim the console will start at $599 for the Digital Edition and $699 for the disc model. Sony is expected to only release the PS5 Pro Digital Edition first with the disc model sometime down the line.
